Hello Shipmates,

NNOA Chapter Miami has already been had at work in the 2011-2012 working year.  We have developed a monthly agenda for the year in cooperation with the Miami ANSO chapter, which will focus primarily on professional development of or service members, mentoring, and community service.

We kicked off our event calendar by bringing home one of the best practices from the National Conference, Miami NNOA /ANSO hosted our first Speed Mentoring Session on 26 September 2011.  Participating in the event were Coast Guardsmen and women from all the local Miami area commands including the District Commander and Chief of Staff, 36 members ranging in rank from CWO to 06.  Special thanks go out to all the Command Master Chiefs for sharing their experiences with our eager junior officers.

Next on our agenda, ANSO/NNOA Miami will be hosting an Enlisted to Officer Workshop on 4 November 2011 at Base Miami Beach, 0900 in the Galley.  The purpose of this workshop is to assist and inform enlisted members looking to apply for Coast Guard officer accession programs such as OCS, DCO, and PPEP.  Some of the personnel that will be available at the workshop will be our local Education Service Officer (ESO), CG recruiter, and a number of officers who have gone through the various programs.  We hope that by the end of the workshop, the participants will leave with a better understanding of the process and the steps needed to successfully complete an application to become an officer.

Additional topics on or Professional Development Agenda include:

  • Officer Evaluation Report Workshops
  • Developing Personal Leadership Mission Statement
  • Time Management II
  • Financial Management
  • Effective Communication
  • Review 28 CG Leadership Competencies

In addition, members of NNOA and ANSO Miami have teamed up with Take Stock in Children Miami, a non-profit organization in Florida that provides a unique opportunity for low-income students to earn college scholarships with the help of caring volunteer mentors matched one on one with students for the entire school year.

Our Chapter executive officers are committed to providing our members with tools that will enhance their effectiveness as officers and as well as make significant contributions to the communities in which we live and work. We are looking forward to another exciting year.

Respectfully,

LCDR Andrea Champagnie, USCG
