19 JAN 2014  - MLK COMMUNITY BREAKFAST:  NNOA Tidewater proudly supports the Urban League of South Hampton Roads as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of its signature event in Hampton Roads.  CLICK HERE for more event details.  If you are interested in attending contact LCDR (ret) Tommy Johnson at [email protected].  

STEM PROGRAM MENTORSHIP:  Over the past two years, the Tidewater Chapter has awarded over $35K to 8 students pursuing careers in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics discipline, three whom are considering careers in the military.  Along with financial support, our goal is to promote awareness and spark interest in government/military sector career opportunities with the STEM connection.  Review the profile attached below and contact LCDR Keith Dobbins ([email protected]) if you or someone you know is interested in serving as a mentor to these young achievers.

PREVIOUS EVENTS

15 OCTOBER 2013 - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MEETING:  Representatives from the Tricare Benefits Office at NOB Norfolk provided information on medical benefits and program updates to include care plan options, medical home port initiative, and service-connected eligibilities.  Valuable questions were addressed by many in attendance on current benefits available, considerations for planning family and after-service medical care, and an expressed need to be informed about past, current and future trends.  Visit http://www.tricare.mil/tma and choose the site map option (top right of screen) to educate yourself on the Tricare program and discover local resources available to assist with questions. 

20 AUG 2013 - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MEETING:  CAPT Dwayne Alexander II, JAGC, USNR from the RLSO Mid-Atlantic Region office provided information on estate planning and legal benefits for military members.   Use the resources included to assure you and your personnel are legally prepared for all circumstances.

17 AUG 2013 - JOINT PICNIC:  This year’s 8th Annual Hampton Roads Mentoring Organization picnic was the largest collaboration of organizations in the history of the event. Participating organizations this year were NNOA, Montford Point Marines Association (MPMA), The ROCKS, Inc. (Army Officers), Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., Urban League of South Hampton Roads and The Honor Flight Network of Virginia. Thanks to LT J.T. Fears for coordinating a successful and enjoyable event for all NNOA and family members able to attend.  Pictures are available on facebook.

16 AUG 2013:  Commander Thurraya Kent, USN, completed a commanding officer tour at Norfolk Public Affairs Support Element (NPASE) and was relieved during a formal change of command ceremony.  CDR Kent served as the public affairs officer for the chapter and contributed to the chapter receiving Best Chapter Newsletter during the 2011-2012 operational year.  CDR Kent has transitioned to the pentagon where she will handle public affairs matters for the Chief of Naval Operations.    

16-18 JUL 2013 - 41st ANNUAL NNOA NATIONAL CONFERENCE:  This summer’s professional development conference occurred on 16-18 July at the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel in Arlington, VA.  The caliber of presentations and contributions by sea service leaders was enjoyed by the over 150 registered attendees across all three sea services.  Thanks to those who represented the Tenacious Tidewater Chapter and supported the organization’s aim to prepare the leadership of today in efforts to produce a more diverse and qualified future sea services officer community.  Visit the national website for pictures from the conference.    

11 JUL 2013:  Commander Milton Troy, III, SC, USN assumed command of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Expeditionary Support Unit (EODESU) 2.  CDR Troy received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in May 1995.

26 JUN 2013: Commander Eric Mason, USN assumed command of Naval Submarine Torpedo Facility Yorktown.  CDR Mason enlisted in the Navy to attend the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program in 1991.  He graduated from Hampton University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, and was commissioned through NROTC Hampton Roads.
